Rep. Diana DeGette cosponsors Energy Innovation Act

By Susan Secord, Boulder chapter

Rep. Diana DeGette has added her name to the growing list of cosponsors of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, H.R. 2307 (EICDA). Rep. DeGette, the seventy-ninth cosponsor of the bill, joins Colorado Representatives Jason Crow, Joe Neguse and Ed Perlmutter in supporting the bill.

During her thirteen terms representing Colorado District 1, Rep. Degette has been a leading voice in Congress on climate solutions that will grow our clean energy economy, and she shares CCL’s commitment to bipartisanship. She serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Natural Resources. Last year Rep.DeGette introduced her own bill — the Clean Energy Innovation and Deployment Act — which would require U.S. electricity producers, which collectively emit nearly one-fourth of all U.S. greenhouse gases, to fully eliminate their net carbon emissions by 2050. She has plans to reintroduce this bill in the current Congress, which will have the more aggressive goal of eliminating emissions in the electric sector by the mid-2030s, and is working, in advance of its introduction in this Congress, on building bipartisan support for it.

Rep. DeGette’s cosponsorship of the EICDA is the result of many years of relationship-building with her office by CCL volunteers in three Colorado CCL chapters: Denver, North Denver, and Denver South Metro. Recently, her Climate Change and Environment Policy Director Nikki Roy was a guest speaker at the joint Denver chapters meeting, where he talked about DeGette’s own bill and discussed the possibility of cosponsoring the EICDA. Rep. DeGette’s co-sponsorship followed soon afterwards. Doug Alde, CCL Liaison to Rep. DeGette’s office, said, “I greatly appreciate Rep. DeGette’s leadership in addressing climate change. I would ask our CCL volunteers to thank her for cosponsoring the EICDA as well as for her work on legislation to establish a national clean energy standard for the electricity sector.”
